songwriter's circle begins
as well as music from Adrianne Lenker, Yard Act, Sona Koloyan, Imogen and Ganavya
Alright. Soft-launching my solo project with some really great mates. The Crypt scene begins. Free entry. Evening. Bring your mates.
As for new music?
Adrianne Lenker dropped her sixth solo album, ‘Bright Future’. Standouts for me are Real House, Sadness As A Gift, Fool, Free Treasure, Vampire Empire (which I didn’t like as a Big Thief song, but LOVE on this record), Evol and Donut Seam. Evol is especially clever; spelling words backwards then linking them endlessly with each other, like the string theory of the universe. A friend said this record sounds like she’s invited everyone to her family campfire. I have to agree.
Sona Koloyan, who I interviewed on this blog previously has released the EP we spoke about called ‘Speaking Stones’. It’s honestly glorious, such a ridiculously beautiful listen. Sufjan Stevens meets Solange maybe? The production in particular sounds so clear and beautiful, and I’m forever a fan of how Sona composes on piano.
Northern star Imogen who supported us at Lafayette has also launched her new project with single ‘Mother Of God’. She’s now called ‘Imogen and The Knife’. What a name for a project, inspired by her experiences of strength and endurance with many operations throughout her lifetime. How utterly exciting! I know Imogen has been working really hard and building up to this for quite some time.
‘like the sky, I’ve been too quiet’ by Ganava feels like someone singing from the depths of the Universe. It’s a spiritual, ambient record that demands listening in a reflective environment, like out in nature, or in a bath.
I went to see Yard Act perform their sophomore album, ‘Where’s My Utopia?’ recently at the Hammersmith Apollo, where frontman James Smith kept saying, “how did we get here?” (reminding me a bit of Talking Heads). I guess they did call their band ‘Yard Act’ and there was something satisfying about seeing the mosh pit at the front of a venue that big. I love the artwork, too:
Anyway. Big love x
