A song I’ve found this week:
Now I’m out ‘the cave’, I think I’m going to turn this into a song-writing blog. We’re making album 3, I’m getting ready to record my solo album and I’m starting to play for other people (!). So I think…the thing I understand most in life? Songs. And I think I like this little life.
So, without further adieu:
Songwriting Prompt:
If there’s one thing AI can’t do, it’s live a human life. If we’re gonna compete against bloody robots (ugh), we need to start offering what the greats used to offer, and what used to be cherished in music - a narrative. Go through your old diaries/iphone memos/notes. Hidden treasures await. What story did you tell yourself about your life, at the time? Why? How is it different now? Why? What did you learn?
Some iPhone scribbles of mine, (what are yours?):
enemies to friends
to lovers, to ends,
back to enemies, again
maybe you can feel time,
because you learned to feel the tide
lost everything, but got myself back
And if you don’t keep a journal, what are you doing?! You’re a songwriter. You’re losing years worth of goldmines. You also have to understand yourself first if you want your audience to!
Throw a Spanner In It:
I wrote once about ‘getting things wrong’. Mistakes in music often create the most interesting stuff, and perfectionism leads to nothing getting finished, or boring stuff.
This week, take a scale and add in one wrong note, just one wrong note.
(You now either have jazz or a mode. You’re welcome.)
